In 2008, a group of university students decided to combine opera and orchestra for a debut concert. We called ourselves SLOW (Student-Led Opera Workshop) and performed what we could in two concerts every year.
In 2011, Brendan McKeen and Brenna Corner decided to put together their first full opera. After that, time moved on and a young artist program and graduate school brought Brendan and Brenna back together for the summer of 2014. That summer, MUO's annual festival was born.
Manitoba Underground Opera creates experiences every summer, drawing you in to another world. Sometimes, we create romance. Sometimes, we make you think. And above all, we make you feel. Every MUO production is unique and is never repeated.
Every August, MUO presents an opera festival featuring a variety of main stage shows and concerts. 2019's season, Reflections of Ourselves, featured three productions focused on social issues.
2019's successful tour of "The Three Little Pigs" brought opera to over 1,000 parents and children in Winnipeg and seven locations in Southern Manitoba all at NO COST for attendees.
Opera Around Town, or OAT for short, is our name for all the free events we do around the city. Whether it is an intimate concert in a museum or Puccini at a farmer's market, there are plenty of ways for you to enjoy opera.
Through unique and immersive experiences in unconventional venues, Manitoba Underground Opera follows opera’s historical tradition telling stories that matter today.
Manitoba Underground Opera's audience is diverse and engaged. As members of this audience experience the world in different ways, so does our company continue to grow and evolve.
